Suicide Prevention in the Asian Community- A 3-Part Series

January 20, 2017:

  • Part 1: Basic Framework – Understand Suicide as a multifactorial phenomenon; Prevalence of suicide and suicide attempts in the Asian community; Stigma and counter transference issues.
  • Facilitators:
    • Irene Chung, LCSW, PhD, retired faculty member of the Silverman School of Social Work at Hunter College whose research and publications focused on suicide attempters in New York City; President, New York Coalition for Asian American Mental Health and coordinator of the suicide prevention project co-sponsored by the Coalition.
    • Nhut Giuc Tran MD, Resident, Dept. of Psychiatry, SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
    • Clinicians from Asian community mental health clinics.

February 24, 2017:  

  • Part 2: Practice Expertise – Risk and Protective Factors; Culturally relevant assessment and intervention; Role Play.
  • Presenters/Facilitators: Irene Chung, LCSW, PhD (and others)

March 31, 2017:

  • Part 3: Review and Summary of Culturally Relevant Engagement, Assessment and Intervention Skills – Discussion and Case Presentations.
  • Presenters/Facilitators: Irene Chung, LCSW, PhD and clinicians from the Asian community.
  • There will be a planning meeting for activities in the summer and fall right after the presentation and discussion: 7.30 – 8.30 pm.  All are welcome. Feel free to bring food and beverages.

Cultural Considerations in the Assessment of Temperament Traits of Children and Adolescents” 

Presenter:  Bao-Tran Nguyen, PsyD, private practice

 

  • Overview of temperament traits and types of temperament in children and adolescents
  • Goodness of fit between children/adolescents and their caregivers in the context of cultural values and norms
  • School adjustment (social, behavioral, and academic issues) impacted by temperament traits and values and norms of the educational system

 

Part 2: May 19, 2017, 6-7.30pm, NYU Silver School of Social Work, Rm. 112

“Assessing for psychosis and working with adolescents and young adults”

Presenter: Daniel Tanh, LCSW, Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services
